It was Mei’s desperation that led her to call Bing for the rest of the money. In order to get the money, it was Bing’s idea to confess everything to mother, and then mother discuss it with father. The phone call Bing had made to mother was Bing’s very fi rst time to contact anyone in our family. All that Bing had said on the phone was regarding the state of Mei and the two boys being in danger, which at once terrifi ed mother so much that she just said, “No matter what, we must keep Mei and the boys safe!!!”
